Internship guide/Colleges, universities and schools

Nasqueron can provide internships to students as part of their studies. We don't currently have budget to offer intern a stipend ; as such, internships are unpaid.

Nasqueron

Those can be, depending of academic requirements:

• directly at Nasqueron, when the program allows an open-source project, and doesn't require a legal entity
• through a host organization, when the program does requires a legal entity

Belgian and international students can apply for Nasqueron projects through Wolfplex Hackerspace ASBL, a non-profit organization under Belgian law. Wolfplex Hackerspace is an open lab project at Charleroi, with focus on computing, electronics and digital arts.

The Nasqueron responsibility is to offer resources and meaningful area of contributions to the student, a chance to participate to the project activities and peers.

The host organization responsibility is to handle the administrative track, for example correspondance with the academic institution, signing convention, communicate paperwork.

Student

The student is responsible to request the internship opportunity, complete paperwork required by the academic institution and communicate in a timely manner to Nasqueron and when application to the host organization about any important deadline.

The student is invited to contribute to the Nasqueron project like any other open-source contributor. A mentor is assigned to the student to give guidance, but not to micro-manage the student.

Academic institution

The academic institution needs to be an accredited school, college or university.

The academic institution responsibility is to clearly document their expectations, the scope of their program and to communicate paperwork beforehand.

A three-party agreement ("convention de stage") MUST be signed by the academic institution, the host organization and the student. The academic institution is responsible to prepare that agreement.

The academic institution is also responsible for insurance.

Workflow

Before the internship

In a first phase, the student reaches Nasqueron project. Idea of project or contributions scopes are seeked.

All the institution paperwork must be communicated to the host organization or Nasqueron project.

Dereckson can act as a contact point to handle the administrative track and fill paperwork.

Student is responsible to submit the paperwork to their academic institution.

During the internship

Evaluation. When an academic institution requires evaluation, the mentor needs to accept responsibility to fill that evaluation. From experience from Google Summer of Code mentoring at Wikimedia, it's important to do regular checkpoints with the student on the matter: if something doesn't go smoothly, there is a need to address that situation as soon as it occurs.

Participation - technical contributions. Technical contributions are one of the two main participation activity. Those. contributions are in the shape of commits, documentation; it helps a lot if code review can be handled quickly, and if any follow-up is indicated.

Participation - project. In addition to technical contributions, the students need to participate to the project, be invited on discussion spaces and meetings. This participation needs to be active.

Specific notes by country

Belgium

The academic institution MUST file the Dinoma STG, and take care of the assurance de travail (work accident insurance).

Information about the insurance policy must be transmitted to Nasqueron or to the host organization.

France

This section is in French, and covers two regular issues with France academic world: focus on economics work than computer work, and COVID-19 violations.

Volet économique du rapport de stage. De nombreux rapports de stage en France demandent aux étudiants de réaliser une analyse économique, par exemple de décrire les relations avec les clients, les fournisseurs et les institutions bancaires de l'entreprise accueillant le stagiaire. En tant que projet open-source, Nasqueron n'est pas une entreprise, n'a pas de relation bancaire et ne raisonne pas en termes de clients et de fournisseurs. Une analyse des prestataires externes, comme les fournisseurs de bande passante, les espaces de colocation ou les serveurs dédiés, est certes possible, mais la notion d'utilisateurs dans un projet open-source ne correspond pas entièrement à celle de clients : notre projet open-source contribue aux biens communs de l'humanité. Nous attirons l'attention des établissements sur le caractère très restrictif de leurs exigences. Même si l'économie des projets open-source et la mesure de leur impact sur les communs plutôt que sur les finances est un sujet de recherche vaste et fascinant, il est difficilement adapté à un rapport de stage concis et n'entre ni dans le champ du cours d'économie, ni dans le cadre de la présente offre de stage.

Notes sur le présentiel. De 2020 à 2022, des établissements, allant de lycées à des grandes écoles, ont exigé que le stage se déroule intégralement en présentiel, menaçant de ne pas valider les stages et faisant fi des mesures de confinement. Ce comportement irresponsable et illégal de la part des établissements met en danger l'équilibre psychique des stagiaires, qui n'ont aucune garantie a priori que leur stage pourra être validé, ainsi que la santé de tous. Les contributeurs du projet Nasqueron ne sont en aucun cas forcés d'effectuer leur stage en présentiel, et les organisations hôtes sont également priées de ne pas l'imposer.
